Evolutionary Linguistics

by Barney Harper

We amend our language

to describe our altered landscape.

We discard tagneghneg,

Yupik for the darkest kind of ice

and replace with solastalgia,

like nostalgia,

a sadness for something lost,

joining the latin solacium for solace

with the Greek, algos, for pain.

Barney Harper, a London based poet and essayist, was one of the participants in Writing for a Substantially Altered World, an online climate literature workshop organised by the magazine It's Freezing in LA! and maat on the theme of Solastalgia.
