K Club with Violet

Invited by Ari Benjamin Meyers

Presented in the context of DIALOGUES

Ari Benjamin Meyers’ K Club (maat, 05/10/2021) makes an imaginary arc of an intimate clubbing night where we are guided by compassion and experimentation. Within this presentation, Lisbon DJ and producer Violet collaborates with this space for music to provide an experience that shall never be repeated. In this exclusive mix for maat, music, friends’ and icons’ voices overlap to create an atmosphere of reflection and internal discovery.

Tracks and words by BLEID (untitled), bell hooks (interview), Violet (untitled), bell hooks (All About Love), Violet feat. ELLES (Inverno em Londres), João Ferreira (interview), Zopelar (Break the Cycle), machiavel (O), BLEID x Odete (Quando ela Passa), Naone (X-TDB133), INVT (Culebra), Postdrone (Dawsha FM, Hassan Abou remix), J-Shadow (Particle Horizon), Che Guevara (speech).

K Club is a musical situation staged for one visitor only at a time. A neon sign marks the entrance to a dance club, the exhibition space is designed accordingly. An important aspect of the work is the waiting: visitors are randomly assigned a number and they are only allowed in if their number is called by the bouncer.

"K Club" is presented at maat in the context of "DIALOGUES", a music programme curated by Carin Abdulá and Joana Seguro.

Ari Benjamin Meyers received his training as a composer and conductor at The Juilliard School, Yale University, and Peabody Institute. Trading the concert format for that of the exhibition, his works as an artist – such as “Kunsthalle for Music” (2018), “Symphony 80” (with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra) and “Solo for Ayumi” (both 2017) – explore structures and processes that redefine the performative, social, and ephemeral nature of music as well as the relationship between performer and audience.

Violet DJ Set, 2021

In Lisbon, her hometown, Violet contributes to the local scene in various ways. She is co-founder of the online radio station Rádio Quântica and resident artist at mina – a queer rave. In 2019, Violet released Bed of Roses, her debut album on the Dark Entries label, which was followed by another one this year, followed later by her sixth and seventh solo EP. Violet incorporates sounds similar to her production process into her DJing, bringing together alien rhythms, imaginative techno, and acid house mutations. She has contributed with mixes to various magazines and series, such as Beats In Space, Crack, Mixmag, Phonica and DJ Mag, and has made her presence felt on radio stations such as NTS, The Lot, and the legendary Rinse - where she maintains a monthly residency.
